How to Protect Your Gutters Before Bushfire Season
Gutter protection is the single most impactful step NSW homeowners can take before bushfire season. This practical guide covers everything you need to do — from clearing debris to installing ember mesh.

Every year, as October approaches, the NSW Rural Fire Service begins its Total Fire Ban season communications. For homeowners across Wollongong, the Southern Highlands, Shoalhaven and the South Coast, this is the critical window to prepare your property — and your gutters are the most important place to start.
Why Gutters Are Ground Zero for Bushfire Home Loss
Research consistently shows that most homes lost in Australian bushfires ignited from embers — not from direct flame contact. Embers travel kilometres ahead of the fire front on the wind, landing in gutters where they find accumulated dry leaf litter, bark and organic matter. The result is a gutter fire that spreads to the roof cavity rapidly, often before the main fire front has arrived.
A home with clean, ember-protected gutters has significantly higher survival odds during a bushfire event — even in a worst-case scenario. A home with blocked gutters full of dry leaf matter is essentially pre-loaded with fuel.
Step 1: Clean Your Gutters Before October
This is non-negotiable for any property near bushland. Before fire season, your gutters must be completely clear of all combustible material:
- All leaves, bark and gum nuts removed from inside gutters
- All downpipes cleared and flowing freely
- Any nesting material removed — both from inside gutters and from gutter ends and joins
- Visible guttering inspected for gaps or damaged sections that could allow embers to enter
Remember: clean gutters won't keep embers out — they just mean there's no fuel to ignite. For true protection, you need Step 2.
Step 2: Install Ember Guard Mesh
Ember guard mesh is the physical barrier that prevents embers from entering your gutters in the first place. With ember guard installed, embers land on the mesh surface, find no fuel, and extinguish or blow away. Combined with clean gutters, this is the most effective gutter-level fire protection available.
Choose the right product for your BAL rating:
- BAL 12.5: Ember-rated aluminium mesh (1.0–2.0mm aperture)
- BAL 19: Fine aluminium or stainless steel mesh
- BAL 29+: Stainless steel — mandatory in some configurations

Step 3: Seal Gutter Ends and Joins
Ember guard on the top of gutters is the main defence — but embers can also enter through open gutter ends, downpipe connections and poorly sealed joins. A professional installation includes sealing these points with appropriate mesh or end caps.
Step 4: Check for Other Entry Points
Gutters protected, your next consideration is the roof cavity. Common ember entry points beyond gutters include:
- Open eave gaps and soffit voids
- Gaps in ridge capping
- Ventilation openings without ember mesh
- Gaps around roof penetrations (plumbing, skylights)
We can assess these during your gutter guard quote and provide a complete picture of your ember protection status.
