Dapto is one of the most established residential parts of the Illawarra, and that shows up in the roofs. A big share of Dapto homes are brick veneer or fibro cottages from the 60s, 70s and 80s, still on their original concrete tile or Colorbond roof, with mature street trees planted at the same time. Those tree-lined streets are what most people love about Dapto, and also what fills every gutter twice a year.
Suburbs like Kanahooka, Horsley, Brownsville, Koonawarra, Berkeley and Kembla Grange all share the same pattern. Well-established liquidambar, jacaranda, plane tree and eucalypt canopy over single-storey homes, with narrower eaves and quad gutters that block easily. Newer estates around Horsley Grange and Wongawilli add modern Colorbond builds with steeper pitches and hip-and-valley designs, but the tree pressure catches up with those homes too within a few years.
You do not get the same salt exposure as Wollongong beachside suburbs here, and Dapto is not in a BAL-rated zone the way Helensburgh or Cambewarra are. So the priorities are different. What actually matters in Dapto is a mesh that can handle very heavy deciduous leaf load in autumn, an install method that suits older tile and quad gutter combinations, and a clean-before-install to remove the years of accumulated bark and sediment already sitting up there.

Why is autumn leaf load in Dapto so heavy?
A lot of Dapto streets were planted with deciduous trees like liquidambar, plane tree and jacaranda in the 70s and 80s, and those trees are now fully mature. A single windy autumn day can drop enough leaf onto a Dapto roof to block half a gutter run, which is why a full-mesh guard makes such a big difference here.
My tile roof is 40+ years old. Can you still install gutter guard?
Yes, that is a very common Dapto scenario and it is not a problem. We use fixing methods designed for older tile profiles that do not disturb the tiles themselves. During the free quote we also check ridge caps, valleys and downpipes so you know what else may need attention.
Do I really need to clean the gutters before guards go on?
On older Dapto homes, yes. There is usually years of leaf sludge, bark and grit sitting in the gutter. Installing new mesh over that would trap moisture against the gutter base and shorten its life. Our price always includes a full pre-install clean.
