5 Things Every Homeowner Should Know About Gutter Guard in the Illawarra

Gutter guard is one of the most searched home improvement topics in the Illawarra — and also one of the most misunderstood. The market is full of products ranging from $3/metre plastic clips to professional-grade aluminium mesh, and choosing the wrong one means money wasted and problems unsolved.

1. Cheap Gutter Guard Is Usually a False Economy

Hardware store PVC (plastic) gutter guards are everywhere — and in our experience, almost universally regretted within 3–5 years. In the Illawarra's coastal UV environment, plastic guards degrade rapidly. They become brittle, warp in summer heat, and develop gaps that allow debris and pests to enter the gutter. Worse, poorly designed plastic guards can actually trap debris on top and prevent water from entering the gutter — defeating the entire purpose.

The lifetime cost of replacing cheap guards twice (or three times) over 20 years almost always exceeds the cost of installing a quality aluminium product once. Professional-grade aluminium mesh, correctly installed, has a 20+ year lifespan in Illawarra conditions.

2. Installation Quality Matters as Much as Product Quality

A premium mesh product installed poorly will fail — and a moderately-priced product installed correctly will outperform it significantly. The critical installation elements are:

• Saddle selection: The saddle (which connects mesh to gutter) must be the correct size and profile for your specific gutter. Wrong saddles allow the mesh to flex, creating gaps under wind and debris load.
• Mitre cutting at corners: Corners must be cut at 45° and joined cleanly — gaps at corners are the #1 entry point for pests and the #1 cause of guard failure.
• Correct tension: Mesh installed too loose will sag and retain debris. Too tight and it may strain gutter joints.
• End sealing: All gutter ends must be sealed to prevent pest access.

This is why DIY installation with even good-quality mesh often underperforms professionally installed products.

3. The Illawarra's Coastal Air Changes Your Product Choice

Properties within approximately 5km of the Illawarra coast — from Wollongong's northern suburbs down to Kiama — are exposed to salt-laden air that significantly accelerates corrosion in lower-grade metals. This affects:

• Galvanised steel saddles and clips — can corrode within 3–5 years in heavy coastal exposure
• Low-grade aluminium alloys — may develop surface corrosion
