What Bird and Rodent Proofing Actually Is

Bird and rodent proofing is the professional sealing of every access point pests use to get into a roof cavity, eave, gutter or solar array. It is not a repellent, a chemical, or a trap. It is a permanent physical barrier of mesh, spikes and end caps installed at the exact places birds, possums, rats and mice are getting in. Done properly it solves the problem once, humanely, without harming the animals themselves.

Wollongong and the Illawarra have significant populations of common mynas, feral pigeons, sparrows, starlings, brushtail possums and rats. Older homes in Dapto, Albion Park, Corrimal and central Wollongong are particularly prone to entry through worn ridge caps, gaps in eaves, and open gutter ends. Newer homes with solar arrays face a different problem, mostly pigeons nesting under the panels.

Who Needs Bird and Rodent Proofing?

  • Homeowners hearing scratching, thumping or bird calls in the ceiling or wall cavity.
  • Homes with visible droppings on gutters, fascias, driveways or under solar panels.
  • Older tile roofs across Dapto, Albion Park and central Wollongong with worn ridge caps and eave gaps.
  • Properties with rooftop solar being colonised by pigeons.
  • Any home that has been treated by a pest controller but keeps getting re-infested. Removal without proofing does not solve the problem.

The Damage Roof Pests Cause

The damage builds up slowly and is often invisible until it is significant. Common outcomes include chewed and shorted wiring, damaged and compressed insulation, bacterial contamination from droppings, moisture retention in nesting material leading to timber rot, corroded gutter and Colorbond finishes from acidic droppings, and blocked gutters from bird nests washing into downpipes. Prevention is dramatically cheaper than remediation.

Common Entry Points We Seal

  • Eave gaps and open soffit voids, particularly on pre-1990 Wollongong housing stock.
  • Ridge cap gaps on terracotta and concrete tile roofs.
  • Fascia to roof junctions where gaps have opened up over time.
  • Under solar panels, the most common pigeon entry point on modern homes.
  • Open gutter ends and internal gutter corners.
  • Ventilation openings without pest-proof guards.
  • Downpipe openings at roof level.

Materials We Use and Why

  • Stainless steel mesh: For high-durability applications and coastal jobs. It will not corrode in salt air and is strong enough to resist rodent gnawing.
  • Powder-coated aluminium mesh: Colour-matched to the roof, corrosion resistant and lightweight. Great for eave voids, gutter ends and general roof line sealing.
  • Stainless steel bird spikes: For pigeon and mynah landing zones on ledges and gutter edges where mesh is not appropriate.
  • Purpose-made solar panel critter guard: Clips to the panel frame, no drilling into panels or roof, preserves airflow and does not affect your solar warranty.
  • Stainless steel fixings throughout: Every screw and clip is stainless, so we are not introducing rust points into a roof line we just sealed.

Our Proofing Process

  1. 1Free on-site inspection: We walk the roof, identify every actual and likely entry point, and check for signs of active nesting or infestation.
  2. 2Written fixed-price quote: You get a clear scope of work and a fixed price before we start, with any legal or timing considerations flagged upfront.
  3. 3Humane preparation: We never seal an active nest with young inside. If eggs or chicks are present we schedule the seal for after fledging.
  4. 4Custom mesh cutting and fitting: Every mesh panel is cut on site to fit the exact opening, corners, ridge caps or panel frame it needs to close.
  5. 5Spike and edge treatments: Where mesh alone is not enough, stainless bird spikes or tension wires are added to ledges and horizontal surfaces.
  6. 6Handover: We walk the finished job with you, provide before and after photos, and hand over the written workmanship guarantee.

Warranty and Workmanship Guarantee

Every bird and rodent proofing install includes a written workmanship guarantee. Mesh and stainless components carry manufacturer product warranties which we hand over on completion. If a sealed area fails or a new entry appears in a serviced area, we come back and put it right.

Local Relevance for Wollongong and the Illawarra

Older Illawarra housing stock is heavily represented in Dapto, Albion Park, Corrimal, Fairy Meadow and central Wollongong. Those homes tend to share the same weaknesses: worn ridge caps, open eaves and standard quad gutters that birds and possums use as highways. Coastal Shellharbour and Kiama add solar array pigeon issues on newer builds. We tailor the seal points and material choice to your specific roof rather than applying a one-size-fits-all kit. See local pages for Wollongong, Dapto and Shellharbour.

Cost

Bird and rodent proofing is quoted per property based on the number and type of entry points to be sealed. For pricing context on gutter guard and related work read our gutter guard cost guide, and book a free on-site quote for an exact proofing price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I remove the birds or possums myself first?

Possums are protected under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act and must be humanely handled by a licensed operator, not simply relocated by a homeowner. Active bird nests with eggs or chicks also cannot be legally disturbed. We advise on timing and legal requirements during the free assessment and always work around active nests.

How do I know if there are pests in my roof?

Common signs include scratching or thumping at dawn or dusk (possums), scuffling during daylight hours (birds), droppings on gutters or exterior walls, visible nesting material in gutters or under eaves, musty odours coming through the ceiling, and birds repeatedly entering and exiting the same spot on the roof line.

Is professional bird proofing permanent?

Correctly installed mesh exclusion is a long-term solution. We use stainless steel or heavy-duty aluminium mesh secured with purpose-built fixings, not cable ties or adhesive. Our installs are designed to last many years without maintenance.

When is the best time to bird proof my roof?

Late winter into early spring, before nesting begins, is the ideal window. Acting pre-season avoids the legal complications of active nests and gets ahead of the busy September scheduling backlog.

Will you damage my roof or Colorbond during the install?

No. Our fixing method attaches to the gutter, fascia or panel frame, not through your roof sheets or tiles. That preserves your roof warranty and keeps the roof watertight.
