Wollongong job — nesting material removed, gutter cleared, custom mesh and stainless steel spikes installed to permanently exclude birds.
Bird and rodent proofing is the professional sealing of every access point pests use to get into a roof cavity, eave, gutter or solar array. It is not a repellent, a chemical, or a trap. It is a permanent physical barrier of mesh, spikes and end caps installed at the exact places birds, possums, rats and mice are getting in. Done properly it solves the problem once, humanely, without harming the animals themselves.
Wollongong and the Illawarra have significant populations of common mynas, feral pigeons, sparrows, starlings, brushtail possums and rats. Older homes in Dapto, Albion Park, Corrimal and central Wollongong are particularly prone to entry through worn ridge caps, gaps in eaves, and open gutter ends. Newer homes with solar arrays face a different problem, mostly pigeons nesting under the panels.
The damage builds up slowly and is often invisible until it is significant. Common outcomes include chewed and shorted wiring, damaged and compressed insulation, bacterial contamination from droppings, moisture retention in nesting material leading to timber rot, corroded gutter and Colorbond finishes from acidic droppings, and blocked gutters from bird nests washing into downpipes. Prevention is dramatically cheaper than remediation.
Every bird and rodent proofing install includes a written workmanship guarantee. Mesh and stainless components carry manufacturer product warranties which we hand over on completion. If a sealed area fails or a new entry appears in a serviced area, we come back and put it right.
Older Illawarra housing stock is heavily represented in Dapto, Albion Park, Corrimal, Fairy Meadow and central Wollongong. Those homes tend to share the same weaknesses: worn ridge caps, open eaves and standard quad gutters that birds and possums use as highways. Coastal Shellharbour and Kiama add solar array pigeon issues on newer builds. We tailor the seal points and material choice to your specific roof rather than applying a one-size-fits-all kit. See local pages for Wollongong, Dapto and Shellharbour.
Bird and rodent proofing is quoted per property based on the number and type of entry points to be sealed. For pricing context on gutter guard and related work read our gutter guard cost guide, and book a free on-site quote for an exact proofing price.
Can I remove the birds or possums myself first?
Possums are protected under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act and must be humanely handled by a licensed operator, not simply relocated by a homeowner. Active bird nests with eggs or chicks also cannot be legally disturbed. We advise on timing and legal requirements during the free assessment and always work around active nests.
How do I know if there are pests in my roof?
Common signs include scratching or thumping at dawn or dusk (possums), scuffling during daylight hours (birds), droppings on gutters or exterior walls, visible nesting material in gutters or under eaves, musty odours coming through the ceiling, and birds repeatedly entering and exiting the same spot on the roof line.
Is professional bird proofing permanent?
Correctly installed mesh exclusion is a long-term solution. We use stainless steel or heavy-duty aluminium mesh secured with purpose-built fixings, not cable ties or adhesive. Our installs are designed to last many years without maintenance.
When is the best time to bird proof my roof?
Late winter into early spring, before nesting begins, is the ideal window. Acting pre-season avoids the legal complications of active nests and gets ahead of the busy September scheduling backlog.
Will you damage my roof or Colorbond during the install?
No. Our fixing method attaches to the gutter, fascia or panel frame, not through your roof sheets or tiles. That preserves your roof warranty and keeps the roof watertight.
