There's a predictable pattern in our enquiries every year. September arrives, nesting season kicks off, and suddenly homeowners who've been aware of the problem for months are calling urgently — because they can hear chicks in the roof. And that's when the complications begin.

Acting before nesting season starts is not just more convenient — it's genuinely simpler, faster and often cheaper. Here's why the pre-season window matters so much.

The Legal Complication of Active Nests

This is the part most homeowners don't know: under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, it is illegal to disturb or destroy an active bird nest containing eggs or chicks. This applies even to pest species like pigeons and mynahs when nesting on private property.

In practical terms, this means:

• If birds have already laid eggs, you cannot legally seal the entry point until the eggs have hatched and the chicks have fledged (left the nest)
• Depending on timing and species, this could be a wait of 4–8 weeks
• During this time, the nesting continues, more damage accumulates, and the birds bond more strongly with the site

By acting before nesting season, you avoid this complication entirely — there are no eggs, no legal obligation to wait, and installation can proceed immediately.

Site Fidelity: Why Established Nesters Always Come Back

Birds — particularly pigeons and mynahs — have extraordinarily strong site fidelity. Once a pair has successfully nested at a location, they will return to that site year after year. Their offspring often nest in the same location. This means that simply removing a nest without sealing the access point guarantees reinfestation — next season, or often within weeks.

The only permanent solution is physical exclusion: sealing every access point so birds cannot return. This is straightforward when done proactively. It's more complex (and more expensive) when you're working around an active nest or dealing with multiple years of accumulated nesting material.

The Accumulating Cost of Inaction

Every nesting season that passes without proofing increases the damage bill:

• Bird droppings are highly acidic — they stain, corrode roofing materials and etch solar panels
