When most people think about bushfire protection for their home, they imagine retaining walls, firebreaks, and non-combustible building materials. What they don't often think about is their gutters — and that's a significant oversight.

Research by the CSIRO and fire authorities across Australia consistently shows that ember attack is the primary cause of home ignitions during bushfire events. What Is Ember Attack?

An ember attack occurs when burning fragments — pieces of bark, leaf, or branch — are carried by wind currents ahead of a fire front. These embers can travel several kilometres before landing, and they land on everything: roofs, decks, gardens, and gutters.

If an ember lands in a gutter full of dry leaf litter, it can ignite within seconds. That small ignition then spreads to wooden fascias, eaves, and ultimately the roof structure — often before the main fire front has even arrived.   • BAL Low: Minimal exposure. Standard gutter guard adequate

  • BAL 19: Medium-high exposure. Ember guard required for new builds; strongly recommended for existing homes
  • BAL 29 / BAL 40: High exposure. Stainless steel ember guard required. Specific aperture standards apply
  • BAL-FZ: Flame Zone. Specialist products and full assessment required

Who Needs Ember Guard in NSW?

If your property is classified as bushfire-prone land under your local council's planning maps, ember guard is strongly recommended. In some LGAs and for certain development types, it's mandatory under council conditions of consent.
